What Is Chantix?
Chantix was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2006 to help patients quit smoking. Chantix works by blocking nicotine from stimulating brain receptors so a user does not receive a dopamine release like they do when smoking, while Chantix delivers a small dose of dopamine to the user so that the user’s urge to smoke is less intense.
What Are the Reported Problems with Chantix?
There have been reports of Chantix user’s experiencing suicidal thoughts, depression, violent behavior and cardiovascular problems. The Institute for Safe Medicines also believes that there is a link between Chantix and serious accidents and falls, cardiac rhythm disturbances, acute myocardial infarction, seizures, diabetes, and psychosis.
What Is the Status of Chantix?
In 2009, the FDA instructed manufacturers of smoking cessation aids, including Chantix, to include a boxed warning label and a medication guide with the drug that warns of the risk of serious neuropsychiatric symptoms, including changes in behavior, hostility, agitation, depression, suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide. The FDA had previously, in 2008, warned healthcare providers, patients and caregivers of the potential risks associated with Chantix.
